Kanoni, the church of Panagia Vlacherna and the Mouse Island in Corfu: The location of Kanoni with the church of Panagia Vlacherna below and the Mouse Island (Pontikonissi) are the most famous and photographed spots of Corfu. Kanoni is actually a quarter of Corfu Town, just a couple of km from the city center. It took its name from an old cannon that stands on top of the hill. This hill is lush green and has many luxurious hotels and local residences.

Some steps go down the hill from Kanoni and you reach the small church of Panagia Vlacherna. A narrow 300m passageway connects the island with the church. Constructed in the 17th century, this lovely chapel has an impressive wooden-carved iconostasis and beautiful frescoes inside. The roof has red tiles and above the gate entrance, there is a tall bell tower.

Fishing boats depart frequently from the church and go to the legendary Mouse Island, just 5 min boat ride. This lush green island took this name due to its tiny size. According to mythology, this rocky island is the ship of Ulysses that was stoned by god Poseidon. In the center of the Mouse Island, there is the 13th-century church of Pantokrator. This church celebrates on August 6th with a large religious panigiri for Corfu.

On top of the hill in Kanoni, there are two cafeterias with amazing view to the church of Vlacherna, the sea, and the Mouse Island. It is also very frequent that you see an airplane landing and taking off from this spot, as the airport of Corfu is right next to the church. Another longer passageway connects the church of Vlacherna with the opposite location of Perama.

Corfu Kaiser’s Bridge: Kaiser Wilhelm II was extremely fond of Corfu and purchased the Achilleion Palace in 1907. Carl Ludwig Sprenger was then appointed as the botanical architect of the palace and was also responsible for the building of the bridge that led to the beach. Named Kaiser’s bridge after its owner, the bridge made reaching the beach easier, which otherwise required traveling through the main connecting road on the island.

The bridge was built in such a way that it formed an arch over the road, covering the lower gardens of the Achilleion and the nearby beach. An important landmark today, it is still preserved not only as a symbol of architectural significance but also of imperial vanity.

Today the bridge is not in the form of its past glory since the central section was destroyed by Wehrmacht, during the Second World War, when the island was under German occupation. The destruction was necessary mainly to allow free movement for vehicles.

Benitses is an colourful fishing village located 12 km south of Corfu town.

The old village has a traditional feel to it, and is surrounded by woodland.

Walking up the old streets one has the feeling that you are in a mountain village in Greece, except that here the sea is near.

The coastal road contains hotels which are suitable for the best and cheap holidays that someone can get, restaurants, cafes and other shops that offer everything that the most demanding visitor can ask.

Benitses is surrounded by mountains on one side and by the aquamarine waters of the Ionian Sea on the other.

Add to this unique combination of nature the natural hospitality of the residents, who are familiar with different cultures, these are what makes visitors love the village.

The Monastery was built around 12th  century and inside in one of the cells a museum has been founded with Byzantine and post Byzantine icons. Information

Canal D’amour

rend a boat in Sidari

Heading west from Sidari on your Wave Boat adventure, your first stop will be Corfu’s famous Canal D’ Amour.

An idyllic area with unique clay rock formations that form a series of wonderful coves and canals, the rocks run in different shades of yellow and are topped with lush greenery. These stunning coves can be reached through several paths and steps, but are far more awe inspiring when viewed from the sea.

With its heavenly crystalline waters, Canal D’ Amour is one of the most unique spots in Corfu, and not just good for the soul but for the body too. You may notice some visitors sat on the rocks with a covered in what seems to be mud, in fact its the clay from the stunning rock formations. It is well known locally, and now by the regular tourists, that the clay from these rocks is great for the completion. So, find a good spot, slap some on and bask in the sun for a bit and wash it all off in the crystal blue waters, it’ll be the best free spa treatment you’ll ever have.

For the romantics among you local legend has it that couples who swim through the narrow canal together will be together for ever, for the singletons it is said that if you swim the length of the canal you will find the one of your dreams. Whatever way you look at it, it’s a pretty magical place all round!

wave boat rend – Sidari boat hire  will give you foul instructions to get there

Apotripiti (Kapases islands), Peroulades

wave boat rend – Sidari boat hire  will give you foul instructions to get there

Apotripiti is another of Peroulades’ hidden gems that you can easily pass by without ever knowing it even exists. Just past Canal D’ Amour beach, you can easily spot this gem while passing by boat by its two islands (Kapases) located just off the shore.

It may be a small beach but it has all the beauty you will come to expect from the beaches in the North of Corfu. Walled by intricate clay rocks and topped with Corfu’s characteristic lush greenery, Apotripiti and the Kapases adds to the long list of small oases that this paradise island has to offer.

If you are feeling adventurous, drop anchor and swim to the Kapases and have some relaxing time basking in the sun or exercise your cliff-jumping skills.

If you want to feel the sand between your toes, Apotripti is another spot where you can enjoy a free spa. Using the muddy sand of the beach as an ointment for your skin and the clay from the rocks as a mask, you will not only come away more relaxed but also with skin as smooth as a baby.

A favorite by many locals, especially children, Apotripiti is a relaxing alternative to Canal D’ Amour.

Logas, Sunset Beach

wave boat rend – Sidari boat hire  will give you foul instructions to get there

The locals from villages all over Northern Corfu know that there is only one place to watch a sunset and that’s Logas. With the Diapontia Islands (Erikoussa, Othoni and Mathraki) just opposite at the height of the summer the sun disappears slowly behind the islands, turning the sky picture perfect pink and has revelers stop what they are doing to watch this everyday miracle.

Popular with tourists too and usually accessed by road Logas, Sunset beach is always crowded during the sunset, so why not watch this stunning spectacle from the sea? Float in the Ionian Sea, watching the breathtaking sunset on the last leg of your journey, or swim to the narrow beach and soak up the rest of the rays on the warm sand.

Cape Drastis, Peroulades

wave boat rend – Sidari boat hire  will give you foul instructions to get there

Cape Drastis is tucked away in the beautiful wooded landscape of the traditional village of Peroulades, in North Corfu.

One of the best things about Cape Drastis, aside from its breath taking beauty, is that the majority of the area can only be accessed by sea (either by swimming or by boat) and this has protected the area from human intervention, keeping its natural beauty unspoilt.

The only exception is the main cape, which can also be accessed by road or by foot. You can moor your boat here for a short while, sunbathe of the clay rocks, enjoy a Greek coffee and enjoy a dip in the crystalline waters.

However, we recommend that you go beyond the cape where you will find many small and beautiful secluded beaches and several islands where you can lie down and enjoy the quiet and tranquility or practice your cliff-jumping skills.

San Stefanos, North West

wave boat rend – Sidari boat hire  will give you foul instructions to get there

Framed with lush green hills, olive groves and an unspoilt rural valley, San Stefanos beach (known locally as Agios Stefanos) is over a mile long and offers shallow, clear blue waters and a broad stretch of golden soft sand and is the final stop to the west of our coastal limits.

This safe, spacious and relatively undeveloped beach is popular place for family holidays, and like Sidari, has visitors that return year after year.

Agios Stefanos was once quiet fishing village that has added tourism over the last twenty years while keeping its identity and village feel.

Roda & Acharavi

wave boat rend – Sidari boat hire  will give you foul instructions to get there

Taking one of our boats east from Sidari Beach will take you to the popular resorts of Roda and Acharavi.

On the way you will find some secluded and unspoiled beaches that are usually unknown to the less adventurous tourist.

Astrakeri beach is part of the traditional Greek village of Astrakeri, out of season it is a sparsely populated village, during the summer season you will find a few traditional tavernas. Further along is the peaceful bay of Agnos surrounded by green hills.

Next stop is Roda, an old fishing village with a long sandy beach, popular with British tourists and has a wealth of bars and restaurants to enjoy.

The last stop on the eastern end of our coastal limits is the busy village of Acharavi. Open all year round it, has some of the classiest beach bars on the north of the island and a beautiful stretch of beach where you can enjoy award winning cocktails and a selection of traditional and modern Greek cuisines.

Boat Trips

From Sidari to Sunset beach the reason that this trip is small is because it lasts 1 hour. Max people for the trip are 5 people. The captain speaks fluent English. He is well known of the history of the location and of the beautiful locations. It is a nice tour in Canal d’amour. You will see beaches with green water, caves a unique view. Canal d’amour is famous. Forged rocks from the sault of the sea make a unique view that looks like an artwork.

Boat Renting

From end to end, our limits (coastal route) strech over approximately 23 km. of coast line. Along of Corfu’s North-west coast you will find something for everyone, from beautiful resort towns live with restaurants, shops and lots of other things to do, to small quite coves and bueatiful beaches only accessible by boat.

Organize well
Check and plan your journey well in order to avoid unpleasant surprises.Give responsibilities to the crew members, organization and division of labor will help all enjoying the experience.

It has an area of some 17,5 acres, belongs to the state and is being administered by the National Tourist Organization. Still preserved on the islet are “the wall” against which stood those condemned to death, the two-storied building that served as the Headquarters of the Italian army and a small church. Lazaretto islet was a concentration camp for the prisoners of the National Resistance movement of the 1941-1944 period.

The island of Vidos

The islet of Vidos lies right opposite Corfu town. This islet is small in size but has yet many special types of flora and fauna around it, thus it is protected as a nature reserve. In the ancient times, this island was known as Ptyhia or the island of Hera. A strong fort, also used as a prison, was built there by the French but was destroyed by the British. It is said that some underwater tunnels, constructed by the French, used to connect Vidos islet and the four fortresses of Corfu. A Serbian mausoleum also stands close to the small port of Vidos in the memory of the thousands of Serbian soldiers, who had died due to starvation and plague on Corfu in the First World War and were buried there. An outdoor cafeteria and tavern offers refreshment drinks and delicious meals, while you enjoy the view of Corfu town. There are some beaches around the islet, suitable for swimming. You can take any path you like after reaching the islet and you are bound to find one. In summer, a camping site for children works there. Small boats connect the old port of Corfu town, right in front of the Court House, to Vidos.

Old Town of Corfu

The Old Town of Corfu, on the Island of Corfu off the western coasts of Albania and Greece, is located in a strategic position at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea, and has its roots in the 8th century BC. The three forts of the town, designed by renowned Venetian engineers, were used for four centuries to defend the maritime trading interests of the Republic of Venice against the Ottoman Empire. In the course of time, the forts were repaired and partly rebuilt several times, more recently under British rule in the 19th century. The mainly neoclassical housing stock of the Old Town is partly from the Venetian period, partly of later construction, notably the 19th century. As a fortified Mediterranean port, Corfu’s urban and port ensemble is notable for its high level of integrity and authenticity.

Mouse Island or Pondikonissi – Vlacherna

Pondikonissi or Mouse island is the name of the most remote island in the bay south of Kanoni, just south of Corfu town. The island is often confused with and mixed with the nearer by island of Vlacherna which is connected with the main land by means of a small dam where also some fishing boats are. On Vlacherna there is a white monastery and a very tall tree. This is one of the most photographed places in the whole of Greece. In the background is Mouse Island. From Vlacherna during the summer months there are boats (in high season every hour) to Corfu town and you can also make a trip to Pondikonissi/Mouse Island. The only building on the island of Pondikonissi is a church that is hidden between the trees. The myth from Homerus says that Odysseus was washed ashore on the island, but other places on Corfu claim the same. The trees on Pondikonissi vaguely resemble mice and thus its name. At a 400 meters distance of Vlacherna is the beginning of the landing strip of the airport of Corfu, which is placed in a lagoon.

The Venetian shipyard built by the Venetians during their rule of Corfu on the west side of what used to be called Govino Bay, the current location of the modern village of Gouvia. The remains of the old arsenal still exist at the Bay of Gouvia, and are located approximately 8 km from Corfu city. The ruins are behind the modern marina of the port of Gouvia and are separated from it by an iron fence.
The Venetians used the bay as a port and their arsenal was built near the water. The Venetian shipyard features three arched docks which were used to service their two fleets which were stationed in Corfu. The columns, walls and arches of the arsenal survive almost intact but the roof is missing.
The arches with Gouvia Bay in the background
The use of the arsenal was officially discontinued when the Treaty of Campo Formio, which was signed on 18 October 1798, signalled the end of the Venetian Republic. Admiral Ushakov landed his troops at the site of the arsenal and created a military camp there during the Siege of Corfu in 1798. The arsenal also functioned as a base for the French in 1917–1918.

Information

Points of interest

Canal D’Amour

Is French for “Channel of Love”. It is a rock formation carved by the force of the sea and wind and can be found near the tourist village of Sidari in the northwestern tip of Corfu. There is something that looks like a cave but actually is a tunnel which leads to the other end of the rock. This tunnel gave the place its name. Legend has it that if somebody swim through the tunnel, the person who will meet at the other end will become his/her eternal love.

Cap Drastis

Cap Drastis is tucked away in a beautiful wooded landscape in North Corfu, namely the traditional village Peroulades. Beyond the cape, where one can sit and swim, there are too many small and beautiful secluded beaches and several islands that allow you to choose the place for you to lie down and have a nice sunbath or swimming away from the overcrowded places. One of the advantages is that access to these places can only be done by sea (either by swimming or by boat) and this is the reason that it is protected from human intervention, maintaining the natural beauty and pristine.
